I think so - I'm making this up, but my best guess at target audience 
would be "tertiary students intending to study software engineering or a 
related field, who may not have prior software engineering experience or 
FOSS exposure, who are taking a class led by an instructor with one 
specific course goal being to introduce students to open source."

Actually, this reminds me of an idea Matt Jadud brought up the other day 
- personas[0][1] for the book. I added that thought here:

"We should explain who this book is for (for instance, in a section in 
the introduction titled "who this book is for"). This will be a 
(nonexclusive) description of our target audience that helps people 
understand the assumptions we may be making as we write. One suggestion 
was to create personas for the book."
