IMO it a lot depends on what you're moving from or towards,
really, as well as what your interests are, money, amount and
kind of in-kind support from the host institution, etc.

A lot of "young" people get excited to do 4-6 month internships;
and a lot of first jobs are 1 year appointments.  And then, the
whole "artist in residence" or "writer in residence" model
suggests that if the financial and/or prestige conditions are
right, people will be lining up for the opportunity.
