Same desperately thrashing to the surface from zillion things happening in the busiest month of the academic year...
This is to endorse Mel's "call for NSF proposal" with POSSE at the center.

Subject: [TOS] Write up POSSE for an upcoming NSF solicitation? Cyberlearning for "Data-Intensive Education-Related Research Funding Opportunities"

Disclaimer: I've been clawing my way through what seems like an endless tidal wave of end-of-semester work, so the presence of this email should be taken as a "Mel desperately thrashes to the surface and flings something to the list before being dragged into the undertow of WORKDEATH again!" rather than "hurrah, her appearance here is indicative that she has free time and is TOTALLY on top of email and other ongoing conversations!"

The NSF is going to come out with a solicitation Real Soon Now that POSSE (and other TOS projects) might fit quite well into:
http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2012/nsf12060/nsf12060.jsp?WT.mc_id=USNSF_25&WT.mc_ev=click

In particular, see
http://www.nsf.gov/publications/pub_summ.jsp?ods_key=nsf11587, which is a solicitation for Cyberlearning research.

"Research supported by the Cyberlearning program will... explore the opportunities for promoting and assessing learning made possible by new technologies, ways to help learners capitalize on those opportunities, new practices that are made possible by learning technologies, and ways of using technology to promote deep and lasting learning of content, practices, skills, attitudes, and/or dispositions needed for engaged and productive citizenship. Cyberlearning research will marry what is known about the processes by which people learn with advances in information and communications technologies to advance understanding of how to cultivate a citizenry that engages productively in learning both in and out of school and throughout a lifetime; and that possesses the knowledge and capabilities to make informed decisions and judgments about problems ranging from their immediate lives to ethics, privacy, and security concerns to global issues such as war and peace, economics, health and wellbeing, and the environment... Cyberlearning innovations will not effect transformations unless they are substantively integrated into authentic learning environments..."

POSSE seems like it's in the 2nd stage (Development and Implementation, or DIP). The deadline for a DIP proposal is January 16, 2013, and it grants $1,350,000 over 4-5 years, which would be MORE than enough to do POSSEs for that time period.

The purpose of this stage of research is to ascertain the potential of ideas, develop guidelines for use of an innovation, and answer research questions about learning with technology. (Sounds like POSSE, yep.)

Prerequisites are the "same as [the previous phase]", which means a "team with a shared vision that takes into account what is known about how people learn, learning in the targeted domain, use of technology for such learning, and challenges for technology use." Additionally, DIP proposals need "completed work equivalent to one or more Cyberlearning EXP projects," which are supposed to be exploratory and 2-3 years in length... exactly the amount of time we've been doing POSSEs for.

I'm not particularly experienced with this "how to identify and apply for appropriate grants" thing, so -- is this something that seems like it might fit for The Future Of POSSE? Or other TOS projects! I feel like we've been monopolizing the conversation with POSSE talk lately and would love to hear more about HFOSS and UCOSP and such as well, but that's me. :)
