POSSE in Bologna, Italy Made Possible by Google Support

Another successful Professors’ Open Source Software Experience (POSSE) workshop was held in Italy July 1-2! The workshop is intended to help faculty members support student involvement in Humanitarian Free and Open Source Software (HFOSS) projects.

Funded by Google, the workshop was led by Dr. Gregory Hislop, Drexel University and Drs. Heidi Ellis and Stoney Jackson from Western New England University. Gina Likins from Red Hat and Kevin Buffardi from California State University - Chico also aided in hosting the workshop. The 15 participants and five leaders came from eleven different countries located on four different continents, creating the most diverse POSSE offered in the past four years. Over 100 faculty members from over 65 academic institutions have attended POSSEs in the past four years.

The workshop was co-located with the 22nd Annual Conference on Innovation and Technology in Computer Science Education (ITiCSE) working groups. We are very appreciative of the help provided by the ITiCSE conference committee in arranging for meals and space.

The workshop began eight weeks prior to the July meeting with online activities and interactions. Participants met virtually three times to compare notes and ask questions. In this manner, participants were able to meet each other before the face-to-face meeting. Participants then met in person for two full days at the beginning of July. Topics discussed during the meeting included:

  * The different ways that HFOSS can be used with students including classes, clubs, and more

  * How to get started involving students in HFOSS

  * How to select an HFOSS project for use with a class

  * How to successfully interface with the HFOSS community

Participants worked in small groups to discuss various aspects of supporting student involvement in HFOSS. One interesting feature was the comparison of how the approaches for allowing student participation in HFOSS could be supported across different countries. Participants left the workshop excited to apply what they had learned in their classes and with a set of potential international collaborators.

We would like to thank the Google Open Source Programs Office for their support of this POSSE. The next POSSE will be held November 16-18, 2017 in Raleigh, NC. The November workshop is only open to instructors at U.S. institutions. Click here to apply.<http://foss2serve.org/index.php/POSSE_2017-11>
