Hi Emily,

I’d love to know more about the course!
Would you have a syllabus online or a webpage for the course?

When I make a new course I usually have the student learning objectives (SLOs, high-level, e.g. understanding of open source concepts) broken down into student learning goals (SLGs, lower level, more concrete, e.g. being able to explain basic FOSS concepts) and then define for each SLG how I will measure whether and how well it was achieved, which would give you the rubric.

I would try to have one post per SLG. That makes it easier for you to rate and also assess your own course.

I don’t have a rubric for blog articles, but in addition to the actual SLG that you want to target per post I would consider rating:
- how well the content is explained by a student
- how insightful their analysis is w.r.t. the question/prompt you gave them
- how well written it is (easy to understand, proper grammar and sentence structure)
- how well visualized the post is (if you want that to be a criterion - and I think it can greatly improve student presentation skills to have them think about visualization)

I put it into a rubric format (attached) but haven’t filled out the details yet.
I am also attaching some standard writing assignment rubrics that I got from a writing instructor a while back.

Hope this helps!
Let me know how it goes, and if you make a proper rubric out of it, I’d love to get a copy (and I’m sure many more on this mailing list).

Kind regards,
Birgit

Hi all,

I?m teaching a new open source class this fall and plan to heavily weight blogs in calculating students? course grades. I know that other instructors have successfully used this approach to assess process, but I haven?t found much online about how to actually implement this.

Would anyone be willing to share their rubrics, criteria, or more general approach for how you have done this?

Thanks!

    Emily
