It seems to me that if your program is ABET-accredited, then _not_ 
talking about this aspect of equity in an open source course might 
result in some criticism from the program evaluators the next time you 
go up for re-accreditation.  After all, ABET (at least many of the 
evaluators I've met) take quite seriously the responsibility to include 
ethical and professional issues throughout the program.
