On top of what David said, if the student can qualify, i'd highly recommend
looking in to Google Summer of Code as a way to get involved in Open Source. I
participated with KDE over the last summer, before enrolling in university
this semester. I know a classmate of mine was able to get involved in SoC
while still in high school, though I'm not sure what strings had to be pulled
to allow for that to happen. It sounds like they're at about the same level
though, in terms of giftedness, so it's definitely possible.
