It is safer for all involved if the default for hitting "reply" only
goes to the sender, not the entire list. This way, when I reply to
people off-list secretly advocating for closed-source software, the
entire community does not get up in arms.

So, really, it's safer for me.

(Humor aside, the default of "reply to sender" matches the majority of
our daily conversations, so I'd suggest we leave the list
configuration as-is. Some mail clients let you choose your reply
preferences, so individuals can choose whether they want to default
their reply action to be to the individual sender or to all recipients
included in the CC: line.)
