Since private spaces are key to communities of practice[1], what if we
explicitly delete the archives after the list has served it's purpose?
This could support all the goals Mel laid out, and emphasize the
timely aspect of the situation.

This could also keep the fire under members of the private list to
move anything that is actually worth keeping to *this* list, so the
private list clears out all worthwhile content in real time. I agree
with Kevin that it's unlikely we'll do such a clearing out after the
fact.
