I'm wondering if you know of any efforts (other than HFOSS) that focuses on computing for good in education.? Things like service learning and community service would count. We're trying to get as international a breadth as possible. Please respond to me directly (ellis at wne.edu) and I'll summarize for the list. Thanks! Message-ID: <20d5292a-3862-1b02-f2ee-7573b05aa20d@wne.edu> Hi Folks, Thought you might be interested in this news about the DoD and open source: The CIO of the U.S. Department of Defense, John B. Sherman, has released a memo titled ?Software Development and Open Source Software?. This document identifies that The Department must follow an ?Adopt, Buy, Create? approach to software which gives priority to open source software when looking for software solutions. This means that DoD must look to open source first, before creating in-house solutions for software projects. It also opens the door for DoD funding of open source software in the case where an application provides much of the needed functionality, but needs further development to meet the need. Enjoy! Message-ID: <0b5313d0-bc2f-4b91-6a3d-ac6948294296@wne.edu> Hi Folks, Thought you might be interested in this post about Runestone Academy. I have used Runestone in an Software Design course where students had to transition from Python to Java and it was hugely helpful. NSF has a new program titled ?Pathways to Enable Open-Source Ecosystems (POSE)?. The goal of the program is to ??harness the power of open-source development for the creation of new technology solutions to problems of national and societal importance.? I am happy to announce that the Runestone Academy has received a POSE Phase I grant to create Open-Source Ecosystem (OSE) which will support the expansion of the Runestone Academy community. The Runestone Academy blog describes details of the grant. Runestone Academy is a Learning Engineering and Analytics Portal (LEAP) that supports the application of evidence-based educational approaches currently for math and computing topics. Additional topics may be under development. Best of all, Runestone learning is free!! And as a sneak preview, our next TOS Time discussion will be led by Jan Pearce from Berea College who will relate her experiences in both using Runestone Academy as well as supporting student contributions to Runestone. Enjoy! Heidi -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
